How Boston University calculates GPA

Boston University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Boston University grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Boston University scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Boston University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

All attempts of a repeated course are included in the GPA; the repeat grade does not replace the original.

Academic standing

term GPI or cumulative GPA below 2.00

Latin honors at graduation

There is no university-wide cut-off at Boston University — each college sets its own. Breakpoints are set separately by each school/college every year, not as one university-wide GPA; no honors below a 3.0 GPA regardless of college.

Dean’s List

Boston University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 GPI with at least 4 term courses totaling not fewer than 15 units.

College of Arts & Sciences policy; other BU schools/colleges publish their own Dean's List pages and may set different thresholds.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation: term GPI or cumulative GPA below 2.00.

Dismissal: GPI and cumulative GPA still below 2.00 during the term of probation.

Good to know

Unlike most peer institutions, BU counts every attempt of a repeated course toward the GPA rather than replacing the earlier grade.

Every figure here was read from Boston University’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
