How Bowie State University calculates GPA

Bowie State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Bowie State grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Bowie State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Bowie State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

A repeat counts the HIGHEST grade earned, not the most recent: only the credit hours and quality points for the highest grade are included in the cumulative GPA. All attempts and grades remain on the academic record, with the superseded entry marked 'excluded from statistics'. A student may attempt the same course no more than three times (original plus two repeats) without departmental permission.

Academic standing

Cumulative GPA below 2.00 at the end of a second semester (a first failure to reach a 2.00 cumulative GPA is Academic Warning). A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is satisfactory academic progress.

Academic probation and dismissal

Probation: Cumulative GPA below 2.00 at the end of a second semester (a first failure to reach a 2.00 cumulative GPA is Academic Warning). A cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 is satisfactory academic progress..

Dismissal: Academic dismissal at the end of any semester when a student who has already incurred a warning and probation has a cumulative GPA below 2.00. A third failure to meet satisfactory performance brings permanent dismissal. After attempting 45 or more semester hours, a probationary warning in two consecutive semesters brings automatic dismissal. A dismissed student must wait one year before reapplying. A transfer student is not dismissed after a first semester if the cumulative GPA is 1.00 or higher..

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know

Bowie State grades on whole letters only - no plus or minus grades exist - and a repeated course counts the highest grade ever earned rather than the most recent attempt.

Every figure here was read from Bowie State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
