How Carnegie Mellon University calculates GPA

Carnegie Mellon University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Carnegie Mellon grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Carnegie Mellon scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Carnegie Mellon University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Carnegie Mellon does not replace grades on a repeat: all grades for every attempt are recorded on the transcript and calculated into the QPA, whether the first attempt was passing or failing. Repeating an already-passed course requires the dean's or department head's approval, and only one set of units counts toward graduation.

Dean’s List

Carnegie Mellon University does not publish one Dean’s List rule. Each home college sets its own Dean's List requirements, described in that college's own catalog section rather than a single university-wide rule.

Good to know

Carnegie Mellon is the only school in this batch with no plus/minus grades at the undergraduate level at all (just A/B/C/D), its failing grade is labeled 'R' rather than 'F', and it counts every attempt (not just the latest or highest) toward GPA when a course is repeated.

Every figure here was read from Carnegie Mellon’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
