How California State University, Los Angeles calculates GPA

California State University, Los Angeles calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Cal State LA grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Cal State LA scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.

Failing grade: California State University, Los Angeles uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Two tracks: up to 16 units of repeated coursework may use 'grade replacement' (new grade replaces the old one in GPA); beyond that, undergrads may repeat 12 more units under 'grades averaged', where both grades remain and both count toward GPA.

Good to know

Disqualification thresholds step up by class level (credits completed) rather than using one flat GPA floor for all undergraduates.

Every figure here was read from Cal State LA’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
