How New York City College of Technology, CUNY calculates GPA
New York City College of Technology, CUNY calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The City Tech grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: CUNY runs one grading scale across all of its colleges. A+ and A are both worth 4.00, so an A+ raises no GPA above 4.0 — unlike the schools that award a 4.3. The scale runs the full width to D- at 0.70, and F is 0.00.
Failing grade: New York City College of Technology, CUNY uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
CUNY's F-replacement policy has applied at every one of its colleges since 1990. Up to 16 failing credits can be excluded from the GPA when the course is retaken and a C or better is earned. The F stays on the transcript — it stops counting toward the GPA, it does not disappear.
Academic standing
City Tech uses a sliding retention standard: the minimum cumulative GPA depends on how many credits have been attempted.

Dean’s List
New York City College of Technology, CUNY names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 credits (full-time, one semester); part-time students need the same minimum over one academic year.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: GPA below the minimum for credits attempted.
Dismissal: fails to reach either the minimum cumulative GPA or a 2.25 semester GPA while on probation.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know
Probation students get a one-semester reprieve from dismissal if they post a 2.25 semester GPA, even without reaching the cumulative retention minimum.
The grading scale and the F-replacement rule above come from CUNY policy and are the same at every CUNY college. Everything else on this page — honors, the Dean’s List, and the retention standard — is set by City Tech itself, and the CUNY colleges genuinely differ. Cum laude starts at 3.50 at Hunter and Queens but at 3.20 at City College and 3.25 at City Tech, and the retention standards split between a flat 2.0 and a sliding scale by credits attempted.
