The John Jay grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: CUNY runs one grading scale across all of its colleges. A+ and A are both worth 4.00, so an A+ raises no GPA above 4.0 — unlike the schools that award a 4.3. The scale runs the full width to D- at 0.70, and F is 0.00.
Failing grade: John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
CUNY's F-replacement policy has applied at every one of its colleges since 1990. Up to 16 failing credits can be excluded from the GPA when the course is retaken and a C or better is earned. The F stays on the transcript — it stops counting toward the GPA, it does not disappear.

John Jay College uses a sliding retention standard: the minimum cumulative GPA depends on how many credits have been attempted.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with at least 12 credits, with every grade C (2.0) or better; any INC, NGR, PEN, W, WA, WN or WU disqualifies.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / Good Academic Standing: Cumulative GPA below the retention standard for credits attempted (see by_credits); general standard is 2.0.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know
John Jay's probation page states no explicit dismissal GPA threshold; it only requires meeting the retention standard or restoring the cumulative GPA to 2.0.
The grading scale and the F-replacement rule above come from CUNY policy and are the same at every CUNY college. Everything else on this page — honors, the Dean’s List, and the retention standard — is set by John Jay College itself, and the CUNY colleges genuinely differ. Cum laude starts at 3.50 at Hunter and Queens but at 3.20 at City College and 3.25 at City Tech, and the retention standards split between a flat 2.0 and a sliding scale by credits attempted.
