How Lehman College, CUNY calculates GPA
Lehman College, CUNY calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Lehman College grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: CUNY runs one grading scale across all of its colleges. A+ and A are both worth 4.00, so an A+ raises no GPA above 4.0 — unlike the schools that award a 4.3. The scale runs the full width to D- at 0.70, and F is 0.00.
Failing grade: Lehman College, CUNY uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
CUNY's F-replacement policy has applied at every one of its colleges since 1990. Up to 16 failing credits can be excluded from the GPA when the course is retaken and a C or better is earned. The F stays on the transcript — it stops counting toward the GPA, it does not disappear.
Academic standing
Lehman College uses a sliding retention standard: the minimum cumulative GPA depends on how many credits have been attempted.
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.74 |
| magna cum laude | 3.75-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Lehman College, CUNY names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with twelve or more credits in residence at Lehman College.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / probation: sliding scale by credits attempted (see by_credits); term index requirement of 2.3 while on part-time probation.
Dismissal: part-time probation students who do not meet the required cumulative GPA or a 2.3 term index are dismissed.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-12 credits attempted | 1.50 |
| 13-24 credits attempted | 1.75 |
| 25+ credits attempted | 2.00 |

Good to know
The grading scale and the F-replacement rule above come from CUNY policy and are the same at every CUNY college. Everything else on this page — honors, the Dean’s List, and the retention standard — is set by Lehman College itself, and the CUNY colleges genuinely differ. Cum laude starts at 3.50 at Hunter and Queens but at 3.20 at City College and 3.25 at City Tech, and the retention standards split between a flat 2.0 and a sliding scale by credits attempted.
