How University of Dayton calculates GPA
University of Dayton calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Dayton grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Dayton scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: University of Dayton uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
When a course is retaken, the higher of the two grades is used in the cumulative GPA (up to 12 semester hours of retakes; Dean's approval required for a third attempt); the lower grade is marked "E" (excluded) on the transcript.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0 (after first term or any subsequent term)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.69 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70-3.89 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90+ |
Dean’s List
University of Dayton names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 semester hours.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / suspension / dismissal: cumulative GPA below 2.0 (after first term or any subsequent term).
Dismissal: suspension if term GPA is below 1.0 regardless of cumulative GPA; students on probation must earn a minimum term GPA of 2.0 the next term.

Good to know
Every figure here was read from Dayton’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
