How University of Delaware calculates GPA

University of Delaware calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Delaware grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Delaware scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.667.

Failing grade: University of Delaware uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

By default all attempts of a repeated course count toward the GPA. A limited, optional grade-forgiveness program lets a student exclude the credit and GPA impact of one prior attempt (course must have been graded C- or lower, taken in Fall 2019 or later, within the student's first 28 attempted UD credits), capped at 8 forgiven credits total; the old grade stays on the transcript.

Academic standing

cumulative GPA below 2.00 ("Academic Warning")

Latin honors at graduation

University of Delaware awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

HonorRequirement
cum laudetop 8% of college's graduating class, min GPA 3.25
magna cum laudenext 4% of college's graduating class, min GPA 3.5
summa cum laudetop 1% of college's graduating class, min GPA 3.75

Set per undergraduate college: each of UD's colleges ranks its own graduating class, so the actual GPA cutoff that lands a student in a given percentile differs by college and by year (e.g. Arts & Sciences 2026-2027: summa 3.992, magna 3.958, cum laude 3.882); the 3.75/3.5/3.25 figures are university-wide minimum floors, not the effective cutoffs.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic warning / dismissal: cumulative GPA below 2.00 ("Academic Warning").

Dismissal: cumulative quality-point deficit of 13.00 or more.

Good to know

Latin honors are not a fixed university-wide GPA: each undergraduate college ranks its own graduating class (top 1%/5%/13% for summa/magna/cum laude, subject to GPA floors of 3.75/3.5/3.25), so the effective cutoff differs by college and by year.

Every figure here was read from Delaware’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
