How Eastern Kentucky University calculates GPA

Eastern Kentucky University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Eastern Kentucky grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Eastern Kentucky scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Eastern Kentucky University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

For repeated courses, the highest grade earned is used in term and institutional GPA calculations and the lower grade is excluded, with limited exceptions (e.g., a grade of S/CR/NC/P will not replace a grade of C, D, FN, F, or FX).

Academic standing

Institutional GPA below 1.5 (fewer than 31 hours), below 1.8 (31-50 hours), or below 2.0 (over 50 hours)

Latin honors at graduation

HonorRequirement
cum laude3.5-3.69
magna cum laude3.7-3.89
summa cum laude3.9+

Dean’s List

Eastern Kentucky University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.75 at 12 credit hours, 3.65 at 13 credit hours, 3.50 at 14 or more credit hours with 12 semester hours (below 12 hours, not eligible).

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation / suspension / dismissal: Institutional GPA below 1.5 (fewer than 31 hours), below 1.8 (31-50 hours), or below 2.0 (over 50 hours).

Dismissal: Students on probation are suspended if they fail to reach a 2.0 semester GPA or the required institutional GPA; after a third suspension, dismissal follows failure to maintain a 2.0 semester GPA, with a 5-year dismissal period.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Class levelCumulative GPA
<31 credits1.5
31-50 credits1.8
>50 credits2.0

Good to know

EKU's standard grading scale uses only whole letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) with no plus/minus modifiers, and its Dean's List GPA threshold decreases as credit hours increase (3.75 at 12 hours down to 3.50 at 14+ hours).

Every figure here was read from Eastern Kentucky’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
