How Emory University calculates GPA

Emory University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Emory grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Emory scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.

Failing grade: Emory University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Emory College does not replace grades on a repeat: all attempts (passed or not), including the original, are calculated into GPA and the original grade stays on the transcript; only the first attempt's credit hours count toward the degree. A course may not be attempted more than three times.

Academic standing

A cumulative Emory University GPA of at least 2.00, and a term GPA of at least 2.00 each enrolled term, are required for good standing; falling short of either while in Good Standing results in Academic Warning.

Latin honors at graduation

Emory University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

HonorRequirement
cum laudetop 15.01-30.00%
magna cum laudetop 5.01-15.00%
summa cum laudetop 5.00%

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic Warning / Academic Suspension / Academic Dismissal: A cumulative Emory University GPA of at least 2.00, and a term GPA of at least 2.00 each enrolled term, are required for good standing; falling short of either while in Good Standing results in Academic Warning..

Dismissal: Academic Suspension follows failure to meet standards while already on Academic Warning; Academic Dismissal occurs when a readmitted student does not meet the GPA and degree-progression standards..

Good to know

Emory counts every attempt toward GPA when a course is repeated (no grade replacement, capped at three attempts total), and it ranks Latin honors by percentile of the graduating class with the exact GPA cutoff set only after grades are finalized each year.

Every figure here was read from Emory’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
