How East Tennessee State University calculates GPA
East Tennessee State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The East Tennessee State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the East Tennessee State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: East Tennessee State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
For a course repeated once, only the most recent attempt counts in the GPA (excluding I, W, WF). For a course repeated two or more times, all grades from the third attempt onward count in the GPA.
Academic standing
0-29 attempted credits: 1.4; 29.1-45: 1.7; 45.1-59.9: 1.9; 60+: 2.0
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.64 |
| magna cum laude | 3.65-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
East Tennessee State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 credit hours, none below a B-.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: 0-29 attempted credits: 1.4; 29.1-45: 1.7; 45.1-59.9: 1.9; 60+: 2.0.
Dismissal: suspension for falling below the combined-GPA standard for the student's credit-hour tier, or below a 2.0 term GPA while already on probation.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-29 credits | 1.4 |
| 29.1-45 credits | 1.7 |
| 45.1-59.9 credits | 1.9 |
| 60+ credits | 2.0 |

Good to know
Repeating a course a second (or later) time counts all grades from the third attempt onward toward the GPA, not just the most recent grade.
Every figure here was read from East Tennessee State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
