How Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University calculates GPA
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The FAMU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the FAMU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Under the Undergraduate Course Forgiveness Policy, a student may petition (up to three times in their career) to have only the final attempt's grade count in the cumulative GPA; without petitioning, all attempts count and a per-course surcharge applies after two attempts.
Academic standing
Academic Probation: cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 after a prior Academic Warning term; probationary students must earn a term GPA of 2.0 or better each semester.
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.00-3.29 |
| magna cum laude | 3.30-3.69 |
| summa cum laude | 3.70-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with full-time enrollment in college-level degree credit courses (no specific credit-hour count stated); cumulative GPA must also be 3.0 or above.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / probation / suspension / dismissal: Academic Probation: cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 after a prior Academic Warning term; probationary students must earn a term GPA of 2.0 or better each semester..
Dismissal: Academic Dismissal: after reinstatement from suspension, failure to maintain a term GPA of 2.0 or greater..

Good to know
FAMU uses no plus/minus grades at all (only A/B/C/D/F), and its course-forgiveness (grade replacement) policy is petition-based and capped at three uses per undergraduate career rather than automatic.
Every figure here was read from FAMU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
