How George Mason University calculates GPA

George Mason University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The George Mason grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the George Mason scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, so it cannot lift a GPA above 4.0, and there are no plus or minus grades at all — only A, B, C, D and F.

Failing grade: George Mason University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

No credit toward graduation is earned from a failing grade or from a grade that is later replaced by a retaken course.

Good to know

Mason's scale skips D+ and D-; any grade below C- drops straight to a single D (1.0) before F.

Every figure on this page was read from George Mason’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so rather than presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
