How Georgetown University calculates GPA
Georgetown University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Georgetown grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Georgetown scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Georgetown University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Students may not repeat a course for which they already earned credit; if repeated anyway, only the first passing grade counts toward GPA (both grades appear on the transcript). If a failed course is repeated and passed, both the F and the passing grade count.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0, or failing a course, or failing to carry a full-time (12-credit) courseload in 2+ semesters
Latin honors at graduation
Georgetown University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | top 25-15.001% |
| magna cum laude | top 15-5.001% |
| summa cum laude | top 5.000% |
Calculated within percentiles of the senior class in each individual school (not university-wide), e.g. separately for the College, SFS, MSB, etc.
Dean’s List
Georgetown University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 credits of coursework for which quality points are awarded (full-time status).
Tiered semester honors: Dean's List 3.5+, Second Honors 3.7+, First Honors 3.9+.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / suspension / dismissal: cumulative GPA below 2.0, or failing a course, or failing to carry a full-time (12-credit) courseload in 2+ semesters.
Dismissal: By class year at year-end: First-year 1.20, Sophomore 1.70, Junior 1.90; also possible after failing a course while on probation, failing two courses in one semester, or three total failures..
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| First-year | 1.20 |
| Sophomore | 1.70 |
| Junior | 1.90 |

Good to know
Georgetown sets Latin honors by percentile within each school's graduating class rather than a fixed GPA, and if a repeated course was already passed, only the first (not the most recent) passing grade counts toward GPA.
Every figure here was read from Georgetown’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
