Grand Valley State GPA
How Grand Valley State University calculates GPA
Grand Valley State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Grand Valley State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Grand Valley State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Grand Valley State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Only the grade and credit of the most recent attempt count toward GPA and earned hours when a course is repeated, whether the new grade is higher or lower; grades of I, W, AU, CR, or NC do not replace an earlier grade.
Academic standing
varies by class level (see by_credits)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.500-3.749 |
| magna cum laude | 3.750-3.899 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900-4.000 |
Dean’s List
Grand Valley State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 or more grade point credits.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / jeopardy of dismissal: varies by class level (see by_credits).
Dismissal: varies by class level (see by_credits).
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

| 25-54 (sophomore) credits | probation 1.801-1.999; jeopardy of dismissal at 1.800 or below |
| 55-84 (junior) credits | jeopardy of dismissal below 2.000 |
| 85+ (senior) credits | jeopardy of dismissal below 2.000 |

Good to know
Probation and dismissal thresholds step up by class level (freshman 1.50/sophomore 1.80/junior-senior 2.00), rather than a single GPA line for all students.
Every figure here was read from Grand Valley State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
