How Howard University calculates GPA

Howard University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Howard grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Howard scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Howard University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

An undergraduate may repeat a D or F grade only once; the lower grade is excluded from the GPA computation but is not expunged from the transcript. Courses required at a C minimum for a major/minor have exceptions.

Good to know

Howard's Dean's Honor Roll GPA threshold is set individually by each school/college rather than as one university-wide number.

Every figure here was read from Howard’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
