How University of Idaho calculates GPA
University of Idaho calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Idaho grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Idaho scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: University of Idaho uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
An undergraduate may repeat a course for grade/GPA improvement; all grades stay on the record but only the highest grade counts in the GPA and credit; repeating beyond a third attempt needs college permission.
Academic standing
U of I cumulative GPA below 2.00
Latin honors at graduation
University of Idaho awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| summa cum laude | top 3 percent of college graduates (5-yr basis); e.g. 4.00 in most colleges for 2026 |
| magna cum laude | top 6 percent (below top 3 percent); e.g. 3.96-4.00 for 2026 |
| cum laude | top 10 percent (below top 6 percent); e.g. 3.92-3.97 for 2026 |
Set per college; the published GPA that corresponds to each percentile differs by college (e.g. Business & Economics cum laude 3.92 vs. Agricultural & Life Sciences 3.95)
Dean’s List
University of Idaho names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with at least 12 credits (10 in the College of Law) of graded coursework.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / disqualification: U of I cumulative GPA below 2.00.
Dismissal: disqualified if, with <33 net credits, semester GPA <2.00 and cumulative GPA <1.80; if 33+ net credits, both semester and cumulative GPA <2.00; first-semester GPA below 1.0 is immediate disqualification.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| <33 credits | 1.80 |
| 33+ credits | 2.00 |

Good to know
Latin honors are set per college by five-year percentile rank rather than a single university-wide GPA, so the qualifying GPA differs by college.
Every figure here was read from Idaho’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
