How Illinois State University calculates GPA

Illinois State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Illinois State grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Illinois State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Illinois State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

When a course is repeated, the most recent grade (A, B, C, D, or F) replaces the previous grade in the cumulative GPA; the earlier grade(s) remain visible on the transcript but do not count toward GPA.

Good to know

Illinois State computes GPA on whole letter grades only (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0); it does not use plus/minus grade points at all.

Every figure here was read from Illinois State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
