How Iowa State University calculates GPA
Iowa State University (Iowa) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Iowa State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Iowa State uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale topping out at A = 4.00 (no A+ boost). Values run A-=3.67, B+=3.33, down to D-=0.67, F=0.
Failing grade: Iowa State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
On a repeated Iowa State course, only the most recent attempt counts in the GPA (up to a designated-repeat credit limit); all attempts stay on the transcript. A repeat at another institution does NOT replace the Iowa State grade.
Academic standing
Minimum 2.0 GPA to graduate; graduation 'with distinction' starts at 3.50. P (pass) = D- or better and doesn't affect GPA.
Good to know
Iowa State uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale that tops out at A = 4.00 (no A+) and runs down to D- = 0.67. Its repeat rule is most-recent-grade — but only for repeats taken at Iowa State; if you retake the course elsewhere, the original Iowa State grade still counts.
