How Indiana University Indianapolis calculates GPA
Indiana University Indianapolis calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The IU Indianapolis grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the IU Indianapolis scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Indiana University Indianapolis uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Only the best (highest) grade among repeated attempts is used in GPA and earned-credit calculations; other attempts are dropped from the student's academic statistics.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0 (good standing requires 2.0 or higher)
Latin honors at graduation
There is no university-wide cut-off at Indiana University Indianapolis — each college sets its own. IU Indianapolis awards 'distinction', 'high distinction', and 'highest distinction' (not Latin-named honors); each degree-granting school sets its own GPA or class-rank cutoff, so there is no single campus-wide threshold.
Dean’s List
Indiana University Indianapolis names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 credits at IU Indianapolis in the semester.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic review: cumulative GPA below 2.0 (good standing requires 2.0 or higher).
Dismissal: dismissal if a semester GPA of at least 2.0 is not attained in any two consecutive fall/spring semesters while cumulative GPA stays below 2.0.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| first semester, 12+ credits attempted credits | below 1.0 GPA triggers immediate dismissal without review |

Good to know
Formerly IUPUI, and distinct from IU Bloomington; graduation honors here are called 'distinction'/'high distinction'/'highest distinction' with GPA cutoffs set individually by each school, not one campus-wide Latin-honors scale.
Every figure here was read from IU Indianapolis’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
