How James Madison University calculates GPA
James Madison University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The JMU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the JMU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: James Madison University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
By default all attempts count in the GPA, but each student may invoke a 'repeat forgiveness' option (max twice) so only the second attempt's grade counts in the cumulative GPA.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0 (probation students capped at 12 credit hours/semester)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.500-3.699 |
| magna cum laude | 3.700-3.899 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900+ |
Dean’s List
James Madison University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.500-3.899 with 12 graded credit hours.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / academic suspension / academic dismissal: cumulative GPA below 2.0 (probation students capped at 12 credit hours/semester).
Dismissal: suspension applies at credit-tiered GPA floors rising toward 2.000 at 120+ hours; a third suspension results in permanent dismissal.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 1-27 credits | 1.500 |
| 28-44 credits | 1.650 |
| 45-59 credits | 1.750 |
| 60-74 credits | 1.850 |
| 75-89 credits | 1.900 |
| 90-104 credits | 1.994 |
| 105-119 credits | 1.999 |
| 120+ credits | 2.000 |

Good to know
Dean's List (3.500-3.899) is a distinct band from a separate top honor for 3.9+/4.0 performers, and suspension GPA floors are set on a fine-grained, near-continuous credit-hour scale (eight bands from 1-27 up to 120+ hours) rather than a few broad tiers.
Every figure on this page was read from JMU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so rather than presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
