How Kean University calculates GPA
Kean University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Kean grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Kean scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Kean University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A repeated course's highest grade is the only one used in the cumulative GPA; all attempts remain on the transcript with an 'R' designation.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.0
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.45-3.64 |
| magna cum laude | 3.65-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Kean University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.45 with at least 12 credit hours (not including pass/fail courses) for full-time students.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: cumulative GPA below 2.0.
Dismissal: a cumulative GPA that would place the student on academic probation for the third time.

Good to know
Kean's scale skips C- and D+ entirely (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, F only), so it does not match any standard 0.3- or 0.33-step table.
Every figure here was read from Kean’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
