How Long Island University calculates GPA
Long Island University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The LIU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the LIU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Long Island University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
A retake replaces the original in the GPA: the second grade is used even if it is lower, and the original stays on the transcript. If a course is taken more than twice, all grades after the first count. For graduation honors, only the first grade in each course is used.

Dean’s List
Long Island University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 credits in the fall or spring semester.

Good to know
On a repeated course LIU uses the second grade even when it is lower than the first, so a retake can pull a GPA down.
