How University of Maine calculates GPA

University of Maine calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Maine grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Maine scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.

Failing grade: University of Maine uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Full replacement: repeating a course removes the prior attempt's credits and grade points entirely; only the most recent completion's credits and grade points count toward the GPA, even if lower.

Academic standing

cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 following a fall or spring term

Latin honors at graduation

HonorRequirement
Cum Laude3.30 - 3.49
Magna Cum Laude3.50 - 3.69
Summa Cum Laude3.70 - 4.00

Dean’s List

University of Maine names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 or higher term GPA with 12 or more credit hours applicable toward the GPA.

Full-time Dean's List; a separate Part-time Dean's List uses a combined GPA across fall+spring

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic Probation / Academic Suspension / Academic Dismissal: cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 following a fall or spring term.

Dismissal: suspended if term GPA is 0.00 with cumulative below 2.00, or (while on probation) semester GPA <=1.00, or cumulative GPA still below the credit-based minimum (1.7 for 0-23 earned credits, 2.0 for 24+ earned credits) unless that term's GPA is 2.00+.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know

Suspension/probation minima scale by earned credits (1.7 for 0-23 credits, 2.0 for 24+), separate from the flat 2.00 used to define 'good standing' itself.

Every figure here was read from Maine’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
