How Marquette University calculates GPA
Marquette University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Marquette grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Marquette scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Marquette University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Both grades remain on the transcript, but the higher of the two grades is used in the cumulative GPA (not simply the latest attempt).
Academic standing
Set per individual college; the university-wide bulletin defers to each college's own academic-probation policy.
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.500 |
| magna cum laude | 3.700 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900 |
Dean’s List
Marquette University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.500 with 12 or more credits.
Set per college; figures shown are from the College of Engineering (no single university-wide Dean's List page found).
Academic probation and dismissal
Required to Withdraw for Academic Reasons (RWAR) / college probation: Set per individual college; the university-wide bulletin defers to each college's own academic-probation policy..
Dismissal: Cumulative GPA below 1.500 (24 or fewer credit hours attempted) or below 2.000 (more than 24 credit hours attempted), evaluated at the end of spring term..
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-24 attempted | 1.500 |
| 25+ attempted | 2.000 |

Good to know
Marquette keeps the higher, not the most recent, of two grades when a course is repeated, and its university-wide dismissal (RWAR) threshold varies by credit hours attempted (1.500 GPA at ≤24 credits vs. 2.000 above that).
Every figure here was read from Marquette’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
