How Miami University calculates GPA
Miami University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Miami University (Ohio) grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Miami University (Ohio) scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Miami University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Course repeat / GPA adjustment: only the higher of the two grades counts toward the cumulative GPA; the lower grade stays on the transcript flagged as excluded from the GPA. All attempts remain visible on the record.
Academic standing

Miami University awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

Percentile cutoffs are computed per academic division each term and posted separately by the registrar (One Stop), not fixed university-wide GPA numbers.
Dean’s List
Miami University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of varies by division (e.g. 3.70 Arts and Science/Creative Arts, 3.80 Education Health and Society, 3.60 Engineering and Computing/Farmer School of Business/Professional Studies) with 12 or more hours attempted for grades (A+ through F) in the semester or term.
Set per academic division as part of one official university policy - the Dean's List recognizes the next 17% of undergraduates within each division, so the qualifying GPA differs by division.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: cumulative GPA below 2.00 once a student has 16 or more cumulative Miami grade-point-average hours (below that, an "Academic Warning" status applies instead).
Dismissal: students with 30+ Miami GPA hours who are on probation are suspended if their semester GPA falls below 2.00.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
