Miami (Florida) GPA
How University of Miami calculates GPA
University of Miami calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Miami (Florida) grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Miami (Florida) scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: University of Miami uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below threshold varying by earned credit hours (see by_credits); first-semester freshmen: semester GPA below 1.3
Latin honors at graduation
University of Miami awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| summa cum laude | top 5% of graduating class, per school/college |
| magna cum laude | next 10%, per school/college |
| cum laude | next 10%, per school/college |
Cutoff percentiles are university-wide but the corresponding GPA is recalculated each year per school/college (e.g., published ranges for 2026-2027 differ between Business School and College of Arts & Sciences)
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Probation: cumulative GPA below threshold varying by earned credit hours (see by_credits); first-semester freshmen: semester GPA below 1.3.
Dismissal: remaining on probationary status after two consecutive semesters on Academic Probation.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| fewer than 33 credits | 1.7 |
| 33-64 credits | 1.8 |
| 65-96 credits | 1.9 |
| more than 96 credits | 2.0 |

Good to know
Latin honors cutoffs are not fixed GPA numbers: they are recalculated every year from the prior graduating class's percentiles, separately for each school/college, so the exact GPA needed varies by year and by college.
Every figure here was read from Miami (Florida)’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
