How Middle Tennessee State University calculates GPA
Middle Tennessee State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The MTSU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the MTSU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Middle Tennessee State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
below 2.00 current-semester GPA, or below the cumulative combined-GPA minimum for hours earned
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.500-3.749 |
| magna cum laude | 3.750-3.899 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900-4.000 |
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: below 2.00 current-semester GPA, or below the cumulative combined-GPA minimum for hours earned.
Dismissal: suspended if the retention standard is missed again the next term of enrollment while on probation.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-29.99 credits | 1.50 |
| 30-49.99 credits | 1.80 |
| 50+ credits | 2.00 |

Good to know
Every figure here was read from MTSU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
