How Mississippi State University calculates GPA
Mississippi State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Mississippi State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Mississippi State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Mississippi State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
cumulative MSU GPA below 2.00 at the end of any term
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.40-3.59 |
| magna cum laude | 3.60-3.79 |
| summa cum laude | 3.80-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Mississippi State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50-3.79 (Deans' Scholars) with at least 12 semester hours of coursework at MSU, no incomplete grades, no grade below C.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / suspension: cumulative MSU GPA below 2.00 at the end of any term.
Dismissal: on suspension, fails to earn a current GPA of 2.0 or higher and remains below the required cumulative GPA.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| 0-18 credits | not subject to suspension |
| 19-36 credits | 1.60 |
| 37-66 credits | 1.80 |
| 67+ credits | 2.00 |

Good to know
MSU's honor-roll equivalents are called President's Scholars (3.80-4.00) and Deans' Scholars (3.50-3.79) rather than a single "Dean's List."
Every figure here was read from Mississippi State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
