How University of Montana calculates GPA
University of Montana calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Montana grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Montana scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: University of Montana uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
The most recent attempt's grade and credits are used in GPA, regardless of whether it is higher or lower than the previous grade; certain non-grade marks (AUD, I, N, NC, W, etc.) do not replace prior grades, and an F on the retake earns no credit.

Dean’s List
University of Montana names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with receive grades of A or B in at least nine credits.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Warning (formerly Academic Probation) / Academic Suspension: cumulative UM GPA below 2.0.
Dismissal: Suspension when a student remains below 2.0 cumulative after a prior warning semester and does not earn at least a 2.0 semester GPA in the interim..

Good to know
Montana always uses the most recent grade for a repeated course in GPA, even if it is lower than the earlier attempt (the opposite of the 'highest grade counts' rule several peer schools use).
