New Hampshire GPA
How University of New Hampshire calculates GPA
University of New Hampshire calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The New Hampshire grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the New Hampshire scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: University of New Hampshire uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
When a course is repeated, the credits and grade points from the earlier attempt(s) are removed before the cumulative GPA is calculated; all attempts remain on the transcript.
Academic standing
semester or cumulative GPA below 2.0 (good standing is 2.0 or higher); first-semester freshmen with 12+ attempted hours and a 1.00-1.49 semester GPA are subject to exclusion
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50-3.64 |
| magna cum laude | 3.65-3.84 |
| summa cum laude | 3.85-4.00 |
Dean’s List
University of New Hampshire names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 letter-graded credits in UNH courses during the semester.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic exclusion / suspension (UNH does not use the term "probation"): semester or cumulative GPA below 2.0 (good standing is 2.0 or higher); first-semester freshmen with 12+ attempted hours and a 1.00-1.49 semester GPA are subject to exclusion.
Dismissal: first-semester freshmen/transfer students with a semester GPA below 1.0 are subject to suspension; a second Academic Suspension with cumulative GPA still below the required minimum results in dismissal.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| first-semester freshmen/transfers, 12+ attempted hours credits | GPA 1.00-1.49 -> exclusion; below 1.00 -> suspension |
| continuing students credits | below 2.00 semester or cumulative GPA -> subject to suspension |

Good to know
Every figure here was read from New Hampshire’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
