How University of New Mexico calculates GPA

University of New Mexico calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The New Mexico grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the New Mexico scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.

Failing grade: University of New Mexico uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Default is that all attempts and all grades count in the GPA when a course is repeated. Undergrads may opt into a Grade Replacement Policy (not automatic, capped at 12 credit hours total, one replacement per course, improved grade only) to remove the lower grade from the GPA.

Good to know

UNM's scale gives A+ a genuine 4.33 boost above a 4.0 'A', unlike most peer scales that cap A+ at 4.0 or omit it.

Every figure here was read from New Mexico’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
