How University of North Dakota calculates GPA

University of North Dakota calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The North Dakota grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the North Dakota scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: University of North Dakota uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

When a course is repeated for a traditional letter grade, the HIGHEST grade earned among attempts is used in the GPA, not the most recent attempt; individual colleges may restrict repeating C-or-better grades.

Academic standing

UND GPA below 2.00 (below 90 total hours) or below 2.00 on both UND and cumulative hours (90+ total hours)

Latin honors at graduation

HonorRequirement
cum laude3.5
magna cum laude3.7
summa cum laude3.9

Dean’s List

University of North Dakota names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of top 15 percent of the student's college with 12 semester hours (at least 8 for traditional letter grades).

computed separately per college, not university-wide

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic warning / suspension: UND GPA below 2.00 (below 90 total hours) or below 2.00 on both UND and cumulative hours (90+ total hours).

Dismissal: a student on Academic Warning whose term GPA is below 2.00 at the end of that semester is suspended; dismissal/further action follows continued failure to meet standards, with reapplication possible after one year.

Good to know

UND's Dean's List is awarded by class rank (top 15% within each college) rather than a fixed GPA cutoff, and a repeated course counts the highest grade earned rather than the most recent attempt.

Every figure here was read from North Dakota’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
