How University of North Georgia calculates GPA

University of North Georgia calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The North Georgia grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the North Georgia scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: University of North Georgia uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

The most recent attempt of a repeated course is used for GPA, not the highest grade; a course may be attempted at most three times.

Academic standing

cumulative GPA below 2.0 after 19 or more GPA hours attempted (18 or fewer hours below 2.0 is Academic Warning, still in good standing)

Dean’s List

University of North Georgia names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 or more credit hours, with no grade lower than B.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation: cumulative GPA below 2.0 after 19 or more GPA hours attempted (18 or fewer hours below 2.0 is Academic Warning, still in good standing).

Dismissal: two-semester academic suspension if a probationary student fails to earn a 2.0 semester GPA in a subsequent semester.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Class levelCumulative GPA
0-18 creditsAcademic Warning if cumulative GPA below 2.0 (remains in good standing)
19+ creditsAcademic Probation if cumulative GPA below 2.0

Good to know

Dean's List requires no grade lower than a B in addition to the 3.5 GPA, stricter than a typical Dean's List rule.

Every figure here was read from North Georgia’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
