How Northern Arizona University calculates GPA
Northern Arizona University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The NAU grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the NAU scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all — only A, B, C, D and F.
Failing grade: Northern Arizona University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Only the highest grade counts toward GPA when a course is repeated; the credit hours can be counted only once toward graduation requirements.
Academic standing
cumulative and/or term GPA below 2.0 (Good Standing requires 2.0 minimum)
Latin honors at graduation
There is no university-wide cut-off at Northern Arizona University — each college sets its own. GPA cutoffs are percentile-based and set separately for each college, recalculated from that college's graduates over the preceding five years -- not a single fixed GPA university-wide.
Dean’s List
Northern Arizona University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 with 12 or more graded units.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Caution / Academic Warning / Academically Paused (replaced "probation"/"suspension" terminology effective Fall 2023): cumulative and/or term GPA below 2.0 (Good Standing requires 2.0 minimum).
Dismissal: Academically Paused after a further term below 2.0 while already on Academic Warning; two consecutive terms below 2.0 is what triggers the Warning, not the pause.

Good to know
NAU's Latin honors are set by percentile rank (top 5/10/20 percent) within each student's own college rather than a fixed university-wide GPA cutoff, and the university replaced "probation/suspension" with an Academic Caution/Warning/Paused system in Fall 2023.
Every figure on this page was read from NAU’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so rather than presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
