How Northern Illinois University calculates GPA

Northern Illinois University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Northern Illinois grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Northern Illinois scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.

Failing grade: Northern Illinois University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Retaking a course in which a D or F was earned replaces the original grade in the GPA; both attempts still appear on the transcript.

Good to know

NIU's Dean's List threshold is not uniform: 3.5 for the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology versus 3.75 for every other college.

Every figure here was read from Northern Illinois’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
