How Northern Illinois University calculates GPA
Northern Illinois University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Northern Illinois grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Northern Illinois scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: Northern Illinois University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Retaking a course in which a D or F was earned replaces the original grade in the GPA; both attempts still appear on the transcript.
Academic standing
first-semester freshmen: cumulative GPA below 1.60; all other undergraduates: cumulative GPA below 2.00
Latin honors at graduation

Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning: first-semester freshmen: cumulative GPA below 1.60; all other undergraduates: cumulative GPA below 2.00.
Dismissal: failing to reach a 2.00 cumulative NIU GPA by the end of the academic warning term, or failing all courses attempted in a single semester.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

NIU's Dean's List threshold is not uniform: 3.5 for the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology versus 3.75 for every other college.
