How Northern Michigan University calculates GPA
Northern Michigan University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Northern Michigan grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Northern Michigan scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7.
Failing grade: Northern Michigan University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
The last grade replaces the earlier one in the GPA, even if the last grade is lower.
Academic standing
Warning probation when the Northern GPA is below 2.00 but at least 1.70; academic probation when the GPA is less than 1.70.
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50 |
| magna cum laude | 3.75 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Dean’s List
Northern Michigan University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50 with 12 credits, with honor points (graded courses) in at least eight credits.
University-wide, per semester.
Academic probation and dismissal
Warning probation / academic probation: Warning probation when the Northern GPA is below 2.00 but at least 1.70; academic probation when the GPA is less than 1.70..
Dismissal: Students on academic probation who miss the required semester GPA are suspended; a student suspended, re-entered and suspended again is dismissed..
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| less than 28 | 1.70 semester GPA or higher |
| 28 to less than 56 | 1.80 semester GPA or higher |
| 56 or more | 2.00 semester GPA or higher |

Good to know
A repeated course is scored on the last attempt even when that grade is lower than the original, so a retake can pull the GPA down.
Every figure here was read from Northern Michigan’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
