How University of Notre Dame calculates GPA
University of Notre Dame calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Notre Dame grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Notre Dame scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all.
Failing grade: University of Notre Dame uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
All attempts count toward cumulative GPA; there is no grade replacement. Only one instance of the repeated course counts toward degree requirements.
Academic standing
semester average below 1.850 for first-semester first-year students, or below 2.000 for all other students
Latin honors at graduation
University of Notre Dame awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.

Cutoffs and exact GPA thresholds are set separately by each college/school and vary by term (e.g. current summa cutoffs range 3.904-4.000 depending on college)
Dean’s List
University of Notre Dame names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of top 30% of students in that college or school (current thresholds range 3.834-3.945 depending on college) with 12 graded credit hours.
Each college and school sets its own minimum GPA, recalculated each semester
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic warning / academic probation: semester average below 1.850 for first-semester first-year students, or below 2.000 for all other students.
Dismissal: two consecutive semesters, or three nonconsecutive semesters, ending in warning or probation status; or a semester average below 1.000 regardless of prior record.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:

Good to know
Notre Dame's Latin honors and Dean's List are not fixed GPA cutoffs: both are set as a percentile (top 5/15/30%) within each student's own college or school, recalculated every term, so the same GPA can earn honors in one college but not another.
