How Oakland University calculates GPA
Oakland University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Oakland University grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: Oakland does not use letter grades as point values at all. Instructors record a number, and “the grading system is numeric and above the 0.0 grade is graduated by tenths from 1.0 to 4.0”. The letters you see quoted elsewhere are descriptive bands over that number, not values in their own right: an A covers 3.6 to 4.0, a B covers 3.0 to 3.5, a C covers 2.0 to 2.9 and a D covers 1.0 to 1.9.
Failing grade: Oakland University records a failing grade as 0.0.
Repeated courses & grade replacement
When a course is repeated the most recent attempt is the grade that counts, unless that attempt is a withdrawal, in which case the earlier grade stands.

Good to know
This calculator takes numbers, not letters, because that is what an Oakland transcript carries. If your transcript says 3.7, type 3.7 — do not round it to an “A” and pick 4.0, which would overstate your GPA by three tenths on that course.
It also means Oakland students can compare grades that a letter-based school cannot distinguish. A 3.5 and a 3.0 are both a “B” at Oakland, but they are half a grade point apart in the average.
