How University of Mississippi calculates GPA

University of Mississippi calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Ole Miss grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Ole Miss scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there are no plus or minus grades at all — only A, B, C, D and F.

Failing grade: University of Mississippi uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

All attempts normally remain in the cumulative GPA (no automatic replacement), but a Forgiveness Policy lets students exclude up to four courses graded C-, D, or F from the GPA, marking the original with an 'R'.

Academic standing

resident cumulative GPA below 1.60 (1-30 hrs), 1.80 (31-60 hrs), or 2.00 (61+ hrs) attempted

Dean’s List

University of Mississippi names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.50-3.74 with 12 graded (A through F) semester hours.

Academic probation and dismissal

Academic probation / academic suspension / academic dismissal: resident cumulative GPA below 1.60 (1-30 hrs), 1.80 (31-60 hrs), or 2.00 (61+ hrs) attempted.

Dismissal: on probation, failing to earn a 2.00 term GPA leads to suspension; failing the 2.00 retention standard again after returning from suspension leads to dismissal.

The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
