Penn West GPA
How Pennsylvania Western University calculates GPA
Pennsylvania Western University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Penn West grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Penn West scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Pennsylvania Western University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
For undergraduates, the most recent grade replaces the original in cumulative GPA regardless of whether it is higher or lower (original stays visible on the transcript); students may not repeat a course in which they earned an A or B unless it is designated repeatable.
Academic standing
cumulative GPA below 2.00
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.40-3.59 |
| magna cum laude | 3.60-3.79 |
| summa cum laude | 3.80-4.00 |
Dean’s List
Pennsylvania Western University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.40 with minimum of 12 graded credits during the semester (excluding proficiency-exam credits, incompletes, temporary grades, or S/U grades).
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / academic dismissal (undergraduate): cumulative GPA below 2.00.
Dismissal: academically suspended two previous times and now meets conditions for a third suspension (no specific GPA figure given for dismissal itself).

Good to know
Unlike its sibling merger Commonwealth University (which kept three separate legacy grading scales), PennWest (California, Clarion, and Edinboro) publishes a single unified grading scale, Dean's List policy, and Latin-honors policy across the whole university.
Every figure here was read from Penn West’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
