How Portland State University calculates GPA
Portland State University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Portland State grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Portland State scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Portland State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Unusual split policy: for original grades A through C-, all attempts (original and repeat) are averaged into GPA; for original grades D+ through F, only the last (retake) grade counts.
Academic standing
cumulative PSU GPA below 2.00 after an Academic Warning term (good standing requires term GPA 2.25+ and cumulative GPA 2.00+)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.67 |
| magna cum laude | 3.80 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Dean’s List
Portland State University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.75-3.99 term GPA (with cumulative PSU GPA of 3.5 or higher) with 12 credit hours carried in the term.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation: cumulative PSU GPA below 2.00 after an Academic Warning term (good standing requires term GPA 2.25+ and cumulative GPA 2.00+).
Dismissal: while on probation, fails to raise cumulative GPA to 2.00 or earn a term GPA of 2.25 or higher.
Good standing requires the term GPA at 2.25 or above AND the cumulative GPA at 2.00 or above - both, not either.

Good to know
PSU's repeat-course rule is split by original grade: A through C- attempts are all averaged into the GPA, but D+ and below are replaced by the retake grade.
Every figure here was read from Portland State’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
