How Purdue University Northwest calculates GPA
Purdue University Northwest calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Purdue Northwest grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Purdue Northwest scale, A+ is awarded but capped at 4.0, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7, and the failing grade is written E, not F.
Failing grade: Purdue University Northwest uses "E" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Only the most recent attempt counts in the GPA; a non-repeatable course may be taken at most three times.
Academic standing
fall or spring semester GPA or overall/cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of any fall or spring semester
Latin honors at graduation
Purdue University Northwest awards Latin honors by rank in the graduating class, not by a fixed GPA, so the GPA that earns each honor moves from year to year.
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| with distinction | 90th percentile of graduation indexes within the college, and not below 3.30 |
| with highest distinction | the three-tenths of qualifying baccalaureate graduates with the highest overall GPA |
(threshold set per college each spring, then applied to the following summer and fall)
Dean’s List
Purdue University Northwest names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.5 cumulative GPA (plus at least a 3.0 current semester GPA) with at least 12 hours included in the cumulative GPA and at least 6 hours in the semester GPA.
Undergraduate; pass/no-pass credits do not count toward the hour totals
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic notice: fall or spring semester GPA or overall/cumulative GPA below 2.0 at the end of any fall or spring semester.
Dismissal: while on academic notice, semester and overall GPA both below 2.0 at the close of a fall or spring semester (dropped from the University).

Good to know
PNW keeps Purdue's E grade - a conditional failure that can be converted to a D by examination without repeating the course - and awards graduation honors by percentile within each college rather than by Latin honors.
Every figure here was read from Purdue Northwest’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
