How Rhode Island College calculates GPA
Rhode Island College calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Rhode Island College grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Rhode Island College scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: Rhode Island College uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
All attempts remain on the transcript but only the highest grade is counted in the cumulative GPA. A course may be repeated only once; a third attempt requires permission from the Academic Standing Committee. Only courses repeated at Rhode Island College are adjusted.

Term GPA below 2.0 with cumulative GPA at or above 2.0 = Academic Warning; term and cumulative GPA both below 2.0 = Academic Notice 1; term GPA at or above 2.0 but cumulative below 2.0 = Academic Notice 2

Dean’s List
Rhode Island College names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.25 with minimum load of 12 earned credit hours, with all passing grades.
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Warning / Academic Notice 1 and 2 (RIC does not use the term probation for undergraduates): Term GPA below 2.0 with cumulative GPA at or above 2.0 = Academic Warning; term and cumulative GPA both below 2.0 = Academic Notice 1; term GPA at or above 2.0 but cumulative below 2.0 = Academic Notice 2.
Dismissal: 12 or more attempted credits with cumulative GPA below 2.0, after Academic Notice 1 or 2, places the student on Academic Dismissal Review; Academic Dismissal (permanent) follows if no appeal is filed or the appeal is denied.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
