How University of Rochester calculates GPA

University of Rochester calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The Rochester grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: On the Rochester scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.7, and the failing grade is written E, not F.

Failing grade: University of Rochester uses "E" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Only the last completed attempt is included in the GPA; the earlier grade stays on the transcript marked R but is excluded from the GPA (the second grade counts even if it is lower).

Good to know

Rochester's failing grade is E rather than F, and Latin honors are awarded by percentile of the graduating class (top 5% / next 12% / next 15%) rather than by a fixed GPA cutoff.

Every figure here was read from Rochester’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
