How Sacred Heart University calculates GPA
Sacred Heart University calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The Sacred Heart grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the Sacred Heart scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Sacred Heart University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Retaking a previously passed course: the best of the two grades counts toward the cumulative GPA, the other remains on the transcript uncounted. Repeating a failed course is governed by a separate Academic Forgiveness policy.
Academic standing
Below 1.800 (<31 credits), 1.900 (31-60 credits), or 2.000 (61+ credits)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.5-3.599 |
| magna cum laude | 3.6-3.799 |
| summa cum laude | 3.8 or higher |
Dean’s List
Sacred Heart University names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.6 with 12 credits full-time (6 credits part-time).
Academic probation and dismissal
Academic probation / dismissal: Below 1.800 (<31 credits), 1.900 (31-60 credits), or 2.000 (61+ credits).
Dismissal: Below 1.00 after one semester; 1.50 (16-30 credits); 1.70 (31-90 credits); 1.90 (91+ credits); or two consecutive/three total probations.
The minimum cumulative GPA depends on how far through the degree a student is:
| Class level | Cumulative GPA |
|---|---|
| Under 31 | 1.800 (probation) / 1.50 at 16-30 (dismissal) |
| 31-60 credits | 1.900 (probation) / 1.70 at 31-90 (dismissal) |
| 61+ credits | 2.000 (probation) / 1.90 at 91+ (dismissal) |

Good to know
Every figure here was read from Sacred Heart’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
