How San Diego State University calculates GPA

San Diego State University (California) calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.

The San Diego State grade scale — what makes it specific

A+ rule: SDSU uses a 4.0 plus/minus scale with NO A+. Grades are A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F (A=4.0 max, down to D-=0.7, F=0). Reported to two decimals, never rounded up.

Failing grade: San Diego State University uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).

Repeated courses & grade replacement

Grade forgiveness: a repeated course can replace the original grade in the GPA, up to CSU unit limits (the original still shows on the transcript). WU (unofficial withdrawal) = F.

Academic standing

Minimum 2.0 GPA. CSU systemwide grading (Executive Order 1037).

Good to know

SDSU follows the CSU systemwide grading rule (Executive Order 1037): there is no A+, so the scale tops out at a plain A = 4.0 and runs the full plus/minus ladder down to D- = 0.7. SDSU reports GPA to two decimals and never rounds up. A repeated course can replace the original grade in the GPA up to CSU unit limits.
