How University of San Diego calculates GPA
University of San Diego calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The San Diego grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the San Diego scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and the scale runs down to D- at 0.67.
Failing grade: University of San Diego uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Academic standing
semester GPA below 2.0, or cumulative USD GPA below 2.0
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.50 |
| magna cum laude | 3.70 |
| summa cum laude | 3.90 |
Dean’s List
University of San Diego names students to its Dean’s List at a term GPA of 3.65 with 12 units or more of standard graded courses (full-time).
USD calls these dean's honors First Honors (3.65 or higher) and Second Honors (3.40-3.64); there is no list titled 'Dean's List'.
Academic probation and dismissal
Scholastic probation: semester GPA below 2.0, or cumulative USD GPA below 2.0.
Dismissal: Scholastic disqualification if probationary status is not ended at the close of the probationary semester (2.0 cumulative and 2.0 for the probation semester, with no incompletes)..

Good to know
D- is USD's minimum passing grade for a course or prerequisite unless a program states otherwise.
Every figure here was read from San Diego’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
