How Southern Illinois University Carbondale calculates GPA
Southern Illinois University Carbondale calculates GPA as a credit-weighted average: multiply each course’s grade points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits. The detail that matters is the grade scale.
The SIU Carbondale grade scale — what makes it specific
A+ rule: On the SIU Carbondale scale, there is no A+ — A = 4.0 is the top grade, and there is no D-.
Failing grade: Southern Illinois University Carbondale uses "F" for a failing grade (0.0).
Repeated courses & grade replacement
Only the most recent grade earned on a repeated course counts toward the institutional GPA and hours earned, even if that grade is an F; transferred grades are excluded from the SIUC GPA.
Academic standing
term or cumulative SIUC GPA falls below 2.0 (Academic Notice, then Academic Warning)
Latin honors at graduation
| Honor | Requirement |
|---|---|
| cum laude | 3.500 |
| magna cum laude | 3.750 |
| summa cum laude | 3.900 |

Academic probation and dismissal
Academic Notice / Academic Warning / Academic Suspension: term or cumulative SIUC GPA falls below 2.0 (Academic Notice, then Academic Warning).
Dismissal: failure to clear Academic Warning status leads to Academic Suspension; reinstatement possible after a minimum of two semesters' interruption.

Good to know
A repeated course's earlier grade is dropped entirely from the GPA calculation (only the latest attempt counts, even if it's an F), rather than both attempts being averaged.
Every figure here was read from SIU Carbondale’s own registrar or catalog. Where a rule is set by an individual college rather than the institution, the page says so instead of presenting one college’s number as everyone’s.
